The present study investigated the influence of water storage on the mechanical properties of four contemporary CAD/CAM resin composite materials: Grandio Blocs, Lava™ Ultimate, Cerasmart™, and Brilliant Crios, along with a direct resin composite, Grandio SO. Rectangular plates were prepared for fracture toughness (KIc), biaxial strength, and cyclic fatigue testing. Half of the specimens were stored dry for 24 hours, while the other half underwent 60 days of ageing in distilled water at 37°C. The Compact-Tension (C(T)) method was used to determine KIc, while biaxial strength and fatigue tests were conducted using a Ball-on-Three-Balls assembly. Additional disc-shaped specimens were produced to assess water sorption.

Results revealed that Lava™ Ultimate exhibited the highest water sorption (42.6 g/mm³), whereas Grandio SO showed the lowest (14.0 g/mm³). A statistically significant reduction in KIc and biaxial strength was observed in all materials after water ageing, except for Cerasmart™.CYCS Antibody MedChemExpress Notably, water exposure differentially affected fatigue behaviour: it increased slow crack growth susceptibility in Lava™ Ultimate but reduced it in Cerasmart™ and Brilliant Crios.IFN-γ Antibody Biological Activity Weibull analysis indicated decreased reliability in most materials post-ageing, except for Cerasmart™, which maintained its shape parameter.PMID:34999526

These findings demonstrate that contemporary CAD/CAM resin composites are vulnerable to hydrolytic degradation, despite their advanced manufacturing processes. The extent of degradation is significantly influenced by filler content and resin matrix composition. While industrial curing enhances cross-linking and reduces porosity, it does not fully prevent long-term water-driven deterioration. The results emphasize the importance of material-specific design considerations for clinical longevity, particularly under moist oral conditions. Future developments should focus on more hydrophobic matrices and improved filler-matrix interfaces to enhance durability.MedChemExpress (MCE) offers a wide range of high-quality research chemicals and biochemicals (novel life-science reagents, reference compounds and natural compounds) for scientific use.
